What is a Community Interest Company?

What exactly is a community interest company (CIC)? I’ve been learning about this recently as I seperate the copywriting and social media management parts of my work from my writing and journaling workshops, which operate on a social enterprise structure.

"A CIC is a type of limited company which exists to benefit the community rather than private shareholders"

It can make a profit, but this must be reinvested into growing the company, and the CIC will be asset locked to an organisation with similar values who will 'inherit' should it close.

With this in place, the CIC can be governed by its director(s) and work to bring a positive impact in the community ✨

I am the sole director for Strength in Feathers CIC, although I will not be paid in this role. My remuneration will be from the workshops I deliver for the community, and any excess profit will be re-invested into the company.

As a CIC, Strength in Feathers will also have the option to apply for community funding and grants, which all help towards making the cost for participants as low as possible. I will continue to collaborate with other local organisations as this is a fantastic way to share resources, spread our reach, and develop new ideas and opportunities.

There are an incredible range of CICs across Cornwall and I can't wait to get working with them in the future... keep an eye out for news and updates on Strength in Feathers Instagram and Facebook, or subscribe to the email list (no spam I promise, just useful info!)

Best wishes to all, and do ping me a message if you have any questions about Strength in Feathers or the wellbeing work I'm doing,

Emily xx
